Mission Statement of Saint Cecilia Preschool

Saint Cecilia Preschool is an early childhood education program for children 3 to 5 years old.  The preschool uses a thematic-based curriculum in which developmentally-appropriate themes are integrated though all subject areas.  The learning themes incorporate Biblical stories as well as pre-reading and alphabet concepts.  Foundations are laid in the Catholic faith as children experience a positive and loving learning environment.  We welcome the support and participation of parents as they are a child’s first and best teachers.

Program Description

A  balance of free choice, teacher-directed activities, group and individual activities, and active and inactive experiences is the goal of the daily schedule. Although the schedule is flexible, following a daily routine provides the preschooler with a sense of security and develops order to the program.

The content offered is age and developmentally appropriate and reflects the purpose of the preschool

AArrival: Children have specific responsibilities including working on their bin. This includes different fine motor activities for each child that changes daily.

Circle: We begin with prayer, morning message of what we will do for the day, calendar, weather, who has jobs, Bible story, and songs.

Centers (free choice purposeful play): Different teacher guided art project daily and opportunity for independent art, small group with 8 children where I teach a specific skill or concept based on the student’s individual goals and the Archdiocese and Iowa Learning Standards. Writing, Library, Dramatic Play (themes that change daily), Sensory (changes weekly), Science, Math, Blocks, Computer.

Snack: Children bring their own snack daily and we provide milk.
Group: This is based on a weekly theme. Read story, activity to teach concepts, music and movement. Religion is also taught with Seeds curriculum teaching the gospel story for the following Sunday.
Outside: Children have their own playground. Indoor physical activities are planned for cold days.
P.E. & Library: Children in the four-year-old program will go the main school for this. It allows them to be introduced to the day school before entering kindergarten.
Music Program: Children are taught songs and rhymes daily. They participate in the Christmas program with the entire school.
Field Trips: Three to five field trips are planned for each class. They also participate in programs which come to the preschool. Included are Story County Conservation, Ames Public Library Smyles Project, and special programs put at the school.
Volunteers: Very much accepted and appreciated at all times. Sign-ups are always available to accommodate parent schedules.
